In the recent past, WRI has entered into MOU with two world renowned Institutes viz. DVS – German Welding Society and Joining Welding Research Institute (JWRI), Japan for collaborative research. At national level, WRI has signed MOUs with major Indian Corporates for long term consultancy services.



MOU with DVS, Germany

Welding Research Institute (WRI) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with German Welding Society (DVS) on 30th October 2012 at Mumbai.  The MOU will pave way for carrying out collaborative research work in materials joining and allied areas and training of welding personnel jointly by DVS and WRI. The MOU also enables DVS to set up its centre at WRI to take German Welding technology to the industries.  Dr. Ing. Klaus Middeldorf, Managing Director, DVS and Mr. R Easwaran, General Manager (WRI & Labs) signed the MOU in the presence of Mr. A V Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL and Mr. Alok Mathur, GM (IC), BHEL Corporate Office. Senior officials from WRI and DVS participated in the event.

MOU with JWRI, Japan

Welding Research Institute (WRI), BHEL Tiruchirappalli has entered into a collaborative agreement with the Joining and Welding Research Institute (JWRI), Osaka University, Japan, an institute carrying out fundamental research related to welding engineering & joining technology. The MoU was signed by Mr. R Easwaran, General Manager, WRI& Labs and Prof. Manabu Tanaka of JWRI, Osaka University, Japan in the presence of Mr. A V Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL Tiruchirappalli and other senior executives at a function held at WRI of BHEL Tiruchirappalli on 8th November 2012. 

Mr. A V Krishnan expressed his confidence that this joint working would be mutually beneficial and would help WRI in its goal of becoming a world class institute. Prof. Manabu Tanaka in his address said, “WRI has already established excellent facilities, advanced equipment and have expertise in the field of engineering and doing excellent service in the field of applied research.  JWRI, which is doing fundamental research and WRI with its expertise in applied research, will mutually benefit each other to carry out advanced research in the science of welding. He also said that the collaboration will not only benefit each other in the science of welding but will also foster the cultural relationship between India and Japan.



BEML Limited

WRI has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bharat Earth Movers Limited on 9th October 2007 for offering welding consultancy on various welding and design aspects to improve productivity and performance of products produced by BEML.  Mr. R.H. Muralidhara, DGM, Corporate Quality, signed the MOU on behalf of BEML and General Manager/ WRI & Labs signed on behalf of WRI, BHEL, Tiruchy.

MOU with AFCONS signed for construction of world’s tallest bridge in Jammu, India

MOU signed between WRI and Chenab Bridge Project Undertaking (CBPU), a unit of AFCONS Infrastructure Limited, Mumbai, to provide welding consultancy, testing and training services for construction of the Chenab Bridge at Jammu and Kashmir for Indian Railways. The MOU assumes significance as the expertise available at WRI will help in speedy implementation of the technically challenging task of constructing the railway bridge which will be at an altituude of 360 m from river bed.

MOU signed with AVASARALA Technologies Ltd for fabrication of nuclear and space components

WRI signed an MOU with AVASARALA Technologies Ltd., Bengaluru to provide consultancy in welding and fabrication of components for nuclear fusion reactor, conventional nuclear and space applications.


In March 2012, Welding Research Institute of BHEL, Tiruchirappalli has entered into an MOU with M/s Pipavav defence and offshore engineering co. limited, Gujarat to provide consultancy and training in welding of ships, offshore structure, etc
Pipavav defence and offshore engineering co. limited, which was formerly known as Pipavav Shipyard Limited has the second largest dry dock in the world.  This company uses the most modern semi- automated and automated welding process like Gas Metal Arc Welding and Submerged Arc Welding process for constructing the modern ships in record time.

The shipyard with state of art equipments and systems with 900 welders on its roll will be provided with latest welding technology inputs from WRI under the MOU which will be in force for three years.  WRI will also provide training to the welding professionals and welders of the company to enhance the productivity and quality further. In a function held at BHEL, Dr. S Suresh, the then General Manager (WRI & Labs) of BHEL and Mr. Avikshit, General Manager & Head, Ship Construction Site (Hull) of the shipyard signed the MOU in the presence of Mr. A V Krishnan, Executive Director of BHEL Tiruchirappalli complex and other senior executives of BHEL and Mr.SushobanChoudhry, VP Marketing of the Shipyard. 


WRI has entered into an MOU with M/s TVS Motor Company Limited, Hosur during March 2012. Under the MOU, WRI will be developing & delivering training courses for the competency development of individuals, vendors of TVSM and students studying under TVSM assisted collaborative education programs at specified educational institutions  in  specialised areas viz. weld joint design, welding process engineering, resistance welding, GMAW, Inspection of welded joints etc. WRI will also provide consultancy and testing services in distortion analysis, macro hardness analysis and metallurgical investigations to TVSM.
In a function held at TVSM Hosur, the MOU between WRI and TVSM was signed by Dr. S. Suresh, the then General Manager (WRI & Labs) of BHEL and Mr. V. Kovaichelvan, Sr. Vice President (HR).  Mr. S Gopinath, General Manager (P&D, Modernisation), BHEL presided over the function.  Mr. S Devarajan, Sr VP (P&D) and Mr. A. Paul Christdas, GM (R&D) of TVSM and Mr. N. Rajasekaran, Manager (WRI) were present during the function.

During the interaction, TVSM made a presentation on the on-going training programme being conducted by WRI to TVSM officials and all the programmes have got very good rating from the participants. Mr.Kovaichelvan expressed the satisfaction of TVSM over the progress in the on-going projects and looked forward to have more interactions with WRI in the future. Mr. Gopinath expressed confidence that the MOU will pave way for mutual development of both the organisations to improve upon further.  He also advised WRI to look into the areas of concern expressed by the participants and improve upon so that the expectations of the participants could be met. 


Welding Research Institute of BHEL, Tiruchirappalli entered into an MOU with M/s Hindustan Construction Co Ltd., a nearly century old company involving in the infrastructure development during May 2012. Through the MOU, WRI will provide welding consultancy, procedure development, inspection and distortion control, training of welding engineers, supervisors and training and qualification of welders as per European standards for the construction of 4.940 km long Bogibeel rail cum road project over the Brahmaputra which will enhance the connectivity between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The MOU was signed by Dr S Suresh, the then General Manager (WRI) and Mr Kishore, Head, Transport sector of HCC in the presence of Mr. A V Krishnan, Executive Director BHEL Tiruchirappalli complex and other senior executives.
